At Our Lady & St Philip Neri, we promote the importance of choosing a healthier and safer way to travel to and from school. During Road Safety week, we remind the children, and staff, how we can stay safe travelling to school. The children enjoy creative and fun activities in their classroom. For example, EYFS engaged in role play to practice how to cross the road safely, and KS1 designed and painted fluorescent tags for their bags so they can be seen in the dark. KS2 collated data on how their class travel to and from school, and then presented the data in a bar graph.
Each year we launch a Road Safety Competition with exciting prizes up for grabs! So for our last competition we set EYFS and KS1 the challenge of designing their dream scooter. The focus was to make their scooter visible to road users, as well as adding a bit of bling! KS2 were asked to design a banner around the theme ‘No need to speed’, encouraging road users to reduce their speed outside the school.
Annually, Year 5 complete the Bikeability course, and the children and staff have an opportunity to have their bicycles checked.
Our Travel Plan is linked to the school ECO policy, to reduce pollution, and to respect and protect our local environment.
